Palheiro Golf Course
Overlooking the town and bay of Funchal, Palheiro Golf Course is set in the grounds of the Palheiro Estate. Nestled in the mist of a pine forest, the 18 continuous hole par 72 course is an unmissable treat when visiting nearby Funchal.
This is often described as one of the most stunning courses in Europe. There is also a total of 5 par 3s, instead of the normal 4. This can be a good course for beginners, as there are numerous tees on each hole, offering the chance to play according to your skill level. If you are however more experienced, and want more of a challenge, try the white tees.
Santo da Serra Golf Course
Host to the annual Madeira Open, part of the PGA European Tour circuit since 1993, with 27 holes available for play, this course offers something for everyone. Training for groups or individuals is possible, should it be required. You could always start this as a new hobby on your annual break!
With panoramic views over the bay of Machico and a comfortable Clubhouse, this golf course can provide a welcome escape. There are three 9 hole circuits encircled by a myriad of unspoilt mountains and valleys. There are four tees to choose from at each hole, so again this is a great choice for those who wish to indulge in a relaxing game. If you do want more of a challenge, this course won’t disappoint.
Porto Santo Golf Course
The nearby island of Porto Santo is home to the newest of the three golf courses, encompassing an 18 hole 72 par course, a nine hole pitch and putt course and a driving range. You can play to a backdrop of spectacular beaches and striking cliffs. There are two separate sections, the North and South Course. The South Course offers a more conventional approach, filled with lakes and offers a longer game. On the other hand, the North course is much more scenic and perhaps more suited to those with less experience.
Indulging in a spot of golf during your holiday will certainly give you the chance to unwind, and with a variety of difficulty levels available, everyone has a chance to complete a round.
